Tess was actually taking the subway back home to her small apartment in Queens. She actually decided to take an early shift at the bar she was working at in Lower Manhattan. By the time she got off it was around 5 or so in the evening. She walked up those subway steps and saw that she was only a few blocks away from home.
As Tess started walking toward the direction of her apartment, she started to think about a lot things. The first thought that entered her mind was her mom. She actually hadn't talked to her mom in months. She knew her mom was still living in her house in Maplewood, New Jersey. Tess wondered if it would be a good idea to actually go visit. The reason she hadn't visit her own mother in quite a while was due to The Company. Tess was almost absolutely certain that she had lost them, but of course Tess could be always be wrong.
The thing about walking alone in Queens was that you had to be on your guard. You never know who might sneak up on you. Tess was just being cautious although sometimes she found herself saying that she was just being too paranoid. Tess looked around quickly thinking that maybe something or someone was following her. Damn, Tess stop being so paranoid. She took one quick look back and by the time she looked forward, she had bumped into someone.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention." Tess said sincerely.

Lance had had a busy day. His regular client, an Annie Booth, had come to him with another problem. Though most of the time he tuned her out. Her frequent visits were driving him to the point of just ending her misery and showing her the light. Although he normally refrained from killing clients. The only up side was that he got most of his income from her.
Taking a long walk through New York, Lance was contemplating his latest predictable. Arthur wanted him to get into the Company. There were rumors of of school for young heroes and Arthur wanted him as a double agent inside that school. "To guide them to the correct path" Arthur had said. Lance didn't mind as much. It was the fact that he had to work with kids was his only issue.
As he was walking, Lance felt a sudden force bump into him. Startled, he looked up. "Oh, no it's ok." he said to the woman who had bumped into him. "I wasn't watching where I was going either."

Tess had this uncanny ability to tell who was from New York and who wasn't. You see, New York people had developed a reputation for being somewhat rude. When someone bumped into you and you tried to apologize for it, they usually ignored and kept on walking. So, Tess was a little surprised when the man she bumped into was actually ...polite. So, she really couldn't help, but open her mouth to ask a question.
"You're not from New York, are you? She asked and then added, " I don't mean to pry, it's just that well, most people in New York would just keep on walking, but you didn't, so hence my question."

Lance smiled at the girl who had bumped into him. No, he wasn't from New York. Well, not till recently anyways. Which reminded him of wondering how his clients knew where he was living now. Shrugging the thought away, Lance returned to the woman before him. "No, I'm not front around here. Well I am now at least. Just moved here from New Jersey. Name's Lance Fox." Lance introduced.
"I'm sure not all New Yorkers are rude. I mean you had the decency to apologize for running into me at least." Lance said. He analyzed the girl. She seemed out of mind, like something was bothering her. "Is something the matter?"

So, Tess was actually right about the guy not being from New York. Then of course, he told her about how he had just moved from New Jersey. She found it kind of odd that just a moment ago, she was just thinking about her homestate and then out of the blue she meets someone who just moved from there. What a coincidence.
"Well, nice to meet you, Lance Fox. " Tess said in response to the guy or Lance introducing himself. When he mentioned that not all New Yorkers were rude since she the decency to apologize. Tess couldn't help, but chuckle a bit. "I'll let you in on a secret; I'm not from New York." she paused before adding, "I'm Tess by the way, Tess Landers."
She figured it couldn't hurt to give the guy her full name since after all he gave her his full name. She felt herself drifting again when she heard Lance ask her if something was wrong.
"Oh, it's nothing." Tess lied. Tess didn't know if she going to be able to fool this guy. She was a good liar for the most part, but sometimes she had her 'off' days where she couldn't lie even if she wanted to. She wasn't sure if today was one of her 'off' days.

Lance stared at her for a moment, trying to analyze her. It was something he did when he tried to get into people's heads. After all he was a psychiatrist and it was his job to know how people worked. From what he could tell, this girl was paranoid about something. What it was he didn't know.
"Well I don't mean to pry, but you sure there isn't anything wrong? It's just I took psychology as my major and I can sort of tell that there's something wrong. You're distracted. You seem to check over your shoulder a lot, as if someone was following you. And just a minute now you were drifting off." Lance said.

Just my luck, I run into a shrink! Tess thought to herself. Sure, this Lance fellow didn't exactly say he was a psychiatrist. but he did mention that he took psychology as a major which only led to Tess assuming he was well... psychiatrist. Tess sort of went to see a shrink when she was about 15 or so. It was right around the time her dad had gotten married again and she started developing her powers. Her mom practically sent to anger management since Tess did have some anger issue which is what triggered her power in the first place. Did the therapy worked? Well, sort of.
Tess then thought about what exactly was she going to tell this guy? She could lie, but she figured the guy would probably figure out that she was lying. However, she could just come out and say, ' Well, there might this Company that could or could not be after me because my father was once a dangerous prisoner and used his powers for the wrong reasons?' Yeah, a great conversation starter.
"I'm sorry. It's just that lately, I've been extra cautious about things to the point where I'm becoming slightly paranoid." she paused adding, "It's just before I came to New York, I ran into some people and I'm not sure if they've actually stopped following me." Tess explained and then shook her head slightly "I'm probably not making sense, huh?

Lance stared at her. "No, you're making sense. Paranoia can come from moving into a new place." James began explaining. "You just never know who to trust sometimes." Lance felt like laughing. Sure he was a therapist, but that didn't mean he was completely trust worthy. He did, after all, tend to blow stuff up in a fiery blaze. Placing a gentle smile on his face, Lance reassured her, "it's likely a chance it's just your imagination getting the best of you."
Lance dug into his pocket. "Look, this might sound weird, coming from someone you met off the street, but, if you need someone to talk to," he handed her his card, "I'll be there. After all, if you already couldn't tell, I'm a therapist. And, it'll be free of charge." he added.

The one thing that Tess sort of disliked about therapists was their logic. She disliked their logic because it actually made sense. When he mentioned how you just never who to trust, Tess knew that statement was true. Her last shrink basically told her that she had trust issues with everything that happened with her dad. Tess knew she still had no clue who to trust. She wasn't even sure about the guy in front of her. Sure, he looked trustworthy. Maybe, that was another thing she didn't like about shrinks; that they always looked and seemed so trustworthy.
Then Tess thought that he was also right about how maybe, it was just her imagination getting the best of her. However, she really couldn't shake the feeling in her stomach that something was going happen. It was usually the feeling she got where she knew she was going to find herself in trouble. She had a knack for trouble. She didn't go out looking for it, it was almost like trouble just found her.
Tess looked at the card that was handed to her. "Yeah, I kind of already figured that you were a therapist and now I have proof that you are." Tess pointed at the card as she responded to his mention of his occupation. " I must be in dire need of therapy if you're willing to not to charge me for it." she joked lightly.
