20th June, 2009
It was a warm summer's morning, and the wind was blowing lightly in through the streets of Brooklyn, the sun unable to help with the buildings blocking the rising sun's wake. A quick blast of cold wind woke Matt up, his eyes immediately opening as he looked around frantically for a moment, before calming down. He looked up, as he saw that his bike had gone missing, obviously stolen in the middle of the night.
"God damn it..." Matt simply said, getting up off of the cardboard mattress he had made the night before and with a swift kick, booted it away in a rage. He raised his hands with a yawn, looking around the street. It wasn't late morning, probably around 6-7am. He quickly put his hands into his pocket and began to walk down the road, his mind filling with the memories that happened the night before.
His power manifested... He was still getting a grip on the fact he possessed a power. The power to heal himself by the looks of things. Little did he know about his true power however. As he pondered about his new power and what to do, he accidently bumped into someone.
"Oh, I'm sorry... I should've watched where I was going." He said with a nod, stopping for a moment to look at the person he had rudely bumped into.

After Emilie had bumped into her brother Stephen in Costa Verde in California, she soon found out that he and their mom now lived in New York. It was almost seven in the morning and Emilie was going out for fresh croissants for their breakfast. She didn't mind doing the breakfast run, it got her out of the house for a while, and after spending many a night on the streets when she had escaped Pinehearst, it was good to be in a home and sleeping on a bed.
The bakery she was planning to go to didn't open until quarter past seven, and it was only approaching seven now, so she was a little early. She was just about to head to the Starbucks to get a coffee while waiting, when she felt someone bump into her. The person apologised fairly quickly, Emilie turned and smiled at the guy.
"It's alright, no harm done." She looked up at him, he seemed to be slightly older than her. Damn she thought, but then she noticed the cardboard lying not too far away, she remembered that well, having had to do the same thing not that long ago. "Can I get you a coffee or something?" She asked, her mom had given her enough money, so it wouldn't hurt to buy him a coffee would it?
She only had to think back what it was like for her all those weeks, living on the streets before she was lucky to have Stephen find her again. Although there was a little more to Emilie's story, she was from the future living in the present now with her mom who was also from the future, and of course her brother, who had actually been living in the present since he went missing from their future when he was four, and he was now thirteen or fourteen, she couldn't remember how old he was exactly.
She also figured if she was going to buy him a coffee, she should say who she is as well, "Emilie Adams." She held her hand out and smiled at him.

Matt looked at the woman he had bumped into with a somewhat of goofy grin as she spoke about it being ok. When she looked at the cardboard box he had used, he couldn't help but gulp a little. She probably thought he was homeless... which was true right now... But also that he was habouring a secret that most people would frown upon. Her question about coffee stunned him a little, his eyes widening for a moment before returning to normal, his mouth curving into a smile.
"Um... Yeah, coffee's great." He said, smiling as she had spoken her name. Her hand was held out to Matt and with his hands gloved up, he shaked her hand. "Matthew Tobruk." He said, smiling as he took off his gloves, his hands beginning to heat up a little from the heat of the morning. He thought that he should let this person know about his power. Afterall, he could only heal... that wasn't dangerous.
"Look... There's something you should know... I have this power... I can kind of heal myself... I only found out yesterday..." He said, half-expecting for her to start ranting about how much she hated evolved humans.

Emilie couldn't help but notice his smile and wondered if she should tell him about her time on the streets also, so he wouldn't feel bad about the cardboard she had spotted before. "That's nothing to feel ashamed of, by the way." She said, pointing to the cardboard, "I've been there and done that." She added, giving him a brighter smile and hoping he would feel better about his situation.
She was glad he agreed to the offer of coffee, "Great, Starbucks is just down here, we can sit inside." She offered, as she pointed in the general direction of where the Starbucks was. As long as she was back home within half an hour of the bakery opening, her mom wouldn't get too worried about her.
"Pleased to meet you Matthew." Emilie said smiling at him, after she shook his hand. Although she had offered her hand without thinking, she really ought to start wearing a pair of lacy gloves or something, so that she wasn't constantly mimicking people's powers all the time, she didn't need them all the time. Although she knew that sometimes she did meet ordinary humans.
The next thing she knew he was beginning to talk to her again, saying he had to tell her something. She just smiled more brightly as he began to tell her what was on his mind, and she started to nod her head in acknowledgment of what he was saying.
"It's alright, I understand, I'm the same as you. Well, I have an ability, I am able to mimic other specials." She explained, she probably wouldn't have been so ready to give that information away about herself, but since Matthew had got in first, she didn't see what was wrong with telling him about herself.

Matt's eyes widened a little at the girl as she explained her power. That was amazing... the ability to mimic powers... How little did he realise that he too shared that power. "You can copy powers?! Wow... That's something else..." Matt said, looking at her with a grin on his face. She must be like the female version of Superman or something...
"So how do you do it? Like, you know... Live with that power..." Matt asked, looking at Emile with a curious look. He needed all the tips he could get, since he was now someone that was different.

{ooc - that's alright - I've replied to worse before now}
Emilie laughed a little at Matt's reaction to her having a power, she figured it was an alright power to have, although, sometimes she wished she was just a normal person. Sometimes she wished they had all been normal people, then maybe her brother wouldn't have vanished when he was four and her twin sister might not have died when they were still very young. Thinking about it all suddenly made Emilie feel a little sad.
She shook it off though, now wasn't the time to get melancholy, besides she didn't want to upset Matt with her history, she was living in this time now, so it was best to look to the future from this point, not delve into the past.
"Yeah, I can copy up to three abilities at a time through touch, but my powers purge every Friday, no matter when I gain an ability. So, if I need an ability for a set length of time to do something, then I usually try to copy the ability at the beginning of a week." She explained to him, giving him another bright smile. It did seem a little strange to be so open to a guy she'd only just met, but she figured it was safe enough to do so, since he just told her he had an ability also.
Emilie laughed a little when Matt asked how she did it, living with the power. "Just take one day at a time. If I don't want to gain any abilities, I make sure I don't touch skin when shaking someone's hand or hugging them. Kissing can be awkward, but then the only people I've kissed are my parents and brother, on the cheek, and well I don't mind gaining their abilities. Although, I don't see my dad anymore, he sort of left the family after the troubles we had, it's just me, mom and my brother."
Again she went into quite an in depth explanation of her power and her past, not even sure why she was doing it, apart from the fact, that maybe it was easy to talk to him because he was, well a stranger to her, and he was neutral to her past and situation. They were soon at the Starbucks, Emilie walked in and waited for Matt, and then she turned to him.
"So, what would you like to drink?" Alright so they were in Starbucks, but they did different types of coffee, so she wanted to know what he would like. While waiting for his answer, she ordered her own latte.

Matt was suprised that she could only mimic three powers at a time. He thought that power mimics should be able to retain all the abilities they absorbed, as he would find out he was capable of. However what was more strange that she lost all the powers on Friday, no matter when she absorbs them. It was strange indeed. "Wow... That's strange. I thought that you should be able to hold all the powers you absorb." He said, looking at the girl with a bit of confusion in his look.
Her reaction to his question about living with powers stunned him a little. That simple huh? Just live each day. And she tried to avoid contact with people. That was something Matt didn't have to worry about, since all he could do was heal. "That's it? Just live each day? Well at least I don't have to worry about not contacting people... You wouldn't have to worry with me either, since all I do is heal." Matt said, smiling at Emile. He couldn't help but feel somewhat attracted to Emile.
She was the first evolved human he had really met. Sure he'd seen them around, but she was the first he'd ever spoken to. Like a normal person. If only his grandfather could have an ability too... It would help him understand how Matt felt.
When Emile asked him what he would like to drink, Matt simply looked up to the building, seeing that they had reached Starbucks already. "To drink? Oh right... I'll just grab a bottle of water if they got some..." Matt said, reaching to his wallet and pulling out a $10 note. "Here... Use this to pay for it." Matt said, holding the $10 note out for Emile to take.

Emilie shook her head slowly when Matt said he thought she would be able to retain the abilities she absorbed. "A normal power mimic can, but my ability isn't like the normal one. There are different types of mimics, my brother Stephen has Quantum Power Mimicry, he gets powers and loses them overnight, although I do believe he has the ability to retain about five now, not sure, you'd really have to ask him."
Emilie liked the fact she couldn't keep the powers she absorbed, because it was always good to get a variety of different powers when she needed or wanted them. Emilie laughed a little when Matt asked in what sounded like an incredulous voice that was that all she did, just live each day. Well what else could she do?
"Yeah, basically, no point in worrying about it I say." She smiled brightly when he said that she didn't have to worry about him because he only had the ability to heal. Although she wondered just exactly what he was getting at when he said that, although Emilie couldn't help but notice how good looking he was. She didn't have a boyfriend, and well, she had never really had one. She thought they had been scared of her father, but since being in this time line, she still hadn't managed to get one.
She sighed to herself then, thinking about it. Once they were inside Starbucks, Matt just asked for a bottle of water. "And a bottle of water please." He was trying to give her money, but she shook her head, she knew what it was like to be on the streets, for what ever reason and be struggling for money. "It's alright, I've got this, you can repay me when you're rich and famous." She said and laughed, as she was handed the bottle of water and the latte.
She then handed him over the water, her latte was in a styrofoam cup, so she could take it out with her. The bakery still wouldn't be opened for a while yet. "Do you want to go for a walk in the park?" She smiled, it was a rather pleasant morning, and she wanted to watch the ducks and swans swimming in the park pond.

"He loses them overnight? Wow that's a bit of a bummer. Happy to hear that he can keep 5 now." Matt said, smiling a little as he looked at Emilie. He wondered what it would be like to hold that sort of power... to be able to be a jack of all trades...
Matt frowned a little when Emilie offered to pay for him, although her comment about him paying her back made him smile a little. "Right... I suppose I could join a circus? I can just see it now. Matthew Tobruk, the indestructable man." He said with a smile. He figured joking around would be a way of Emilie to try and avoid the question about why he was living out on the streets for now.
When he was asked to go to the park, he simply smiled and nodded. "Yeah... why not. It's not like I have to be home at a certain time, right?" He said with a chuckle, taking his bottle of water from Emilie, and putting it into his bag.

Emilie laughed a little when Matt said it was a bummer her brother lost his powers over night although he was happy to hear he could keep five now. "Yeah, I think Stephen's quite happy about that prospect as well. I don't mind losing the powers every Friday, makes for an interesting life when you can gather several different powers and use them."
When Emilie had offered to pay for his drink she noticed him frown a little. Probably because it wasn't the done thing for the girl to pay for the guy, was he a little old fashioned then? It was different in her time line, when you went on a date you sometimes split the cost between you. Oh well, she noticed him smiling when she told him he could pay her back when he was rich and famous. It was only a bottle of water, hardly cost a fortune now, did it?
When he spoke about joining the circus, he made Emilie laugh out loud, it had been quite a while since someone had made her laugh quite like that. What with her life being so rubbish recently. Just thinking about it made her feel a little upset, but she shook the thoughts from her head.
"It might be something to look into you know." She was pretending to be serious, but the smile on his face just made her laugh all the more. It was hopeless. So, he had a good sense of humour, that was always a plus. If you could make someone laugh, half the battle won.
When she had suggested going to the park, Matt had said alright and mentioned it wasn't like he had anywhere to be. Making a joke of his situation, something she had done many a time herself. "Alright, great. Just follow me." She then headed in the general direction of the park, which would only take them a few moments to reach.
Approximately five minutes later, they had reached the park and Emilie headed for the duck and swan pond immediately. There was a bench and so she sat down and just began to stare out across the water. Thoughts of her time in the Pinehearst cell suddenly flashed through her head, and she felt tears well in her eyes. Damn it to hell she thought.

When Emilie laughed at his comment about the circus, Matt couldn't help but chuckle along with her. He liked it when he made others smile. It made him feel more like he was connecting with them in a friendly way. Her comment about him looking into that as a career, he simply smiled. "Hmm... maybe I should write up a resume? Maybe put you down as a reference?" He said with a smile.
When Emilie began to lead Matt in the direction of the park, he simply nodded and followed her. Within 5 minutes they were at the park and as Emilie headed for the duck pond, Matt followed suite, sitting down next to her, as he took a sip of his bottle of water. He turned his head to ask Emilie a question, only to see that she was crying.
"Hey... You alright? Was your coffee a little hot?" Matt asked as someone that was walking past, suddenly reached out an grabbed the bottle that Matt was holding. "HEY!" Matt yelled, reaching out to grab the man's arm, making skin contact with him whilst he grabbed his bottle back. The man simply pulled out of Matt's reach and ran off away from the duo.
Matt could hear Emilie behind him, however it didn't sound like it was coming from his ears... Everything was suddenly louder... people speaking everywhere around them... Emilie was the loudest because she was closest... But it wasn't what she was speaking about earlier...
A jail cell in a place called Pinehearst was what he could hear her say, but as he turned to look at her, she wasn't speaking... "What the hell..." Matt said as he grabbed his head, the voices of the minds around him making his head hurt. "What the hell is going on? How are you talking without speaking?!" Matt said, sitting back on the bench, his head feeling as though it was about to crack in half.

Emilie laughed again when Matt suggested writing a resumé and putting her name down as a reference. Without even thinking what she was saying, she replied with, "You could put me down as anything you like." She immediately blushed, what the hell was she doing? It was like she was out of control or something. She was never usually quite so open like that with guys, what was he doing to her?
Damn, he had caught her crying. She hadn't wanted that to happen, because, maybe now she was going to have to tell him about her past, and she hadn't wanted to. Not the coffee, she said to herself. She shook her head then, "Sorry, I've just, it doesn't matter." She didn't need to bother such a nice guy with her problems.
But then a guy had went to grab Matt's water from him, Emilie would have said something, but she felt it might be safer to keep her mouth closed, the guy might have tried to attack her and she'd had enough of that inside Pinehearst. After Matt had grabbed his water back however, she noticed he was grabbing his head, and then began to talk about why was he hearing her speak when she wasn't saying anything.
How the hell could that be? Had he heard her mention Pinehearst? Then he asked why was he hearing her speak without her actually talking. She turned to him, not that she knew anybody with the ability, but being from the future she knew enough about all the different abilities out there.
"Oh! You must have picked up the telepathy ability, probably from the guy you had to grab the water back from. Seeing as you're only now hearing my thoughts, thoughts I would have rather kept back from you. You don't need to hear about my sorry past, sorry." Emilie had more or less rambled the words out, and now that he knew about that, he probably wouldn't want to know about her anymore.
"Just learn to control what you hear. You have the ability to do it, you just have to focus." With that she thought he might be better off not knowing her, her life and past was too complicated, she stood up from the bench to leave him, he didn't need his life anymore complicated.
{ooc - you can have him go after her - this is nowhere near finished yet lol}

"Wait! What the hell? What do you mean I picked up this ability? How the hell did I pick up someone's power? I only heal! Why am I hearing thoughts?!" Matt said, raising his voice to try and keep out the ones in his head. Emilie's was the loudest. Her thoughts about Pinehearst, her past... Was he hearing her memories?
As she explained that he needed to focus his mind to control the thoughts, he simply shook his head, the pain getting stronger. He looked at her getting up, quickly reaching up with a hand to grab her hand to try and keep her close to him. He missed and got up and followed her, keeping up with her pace. "Please... Don't leave me..." He said, his face scrunched with pain as the voices around him got louder.
Oh my god... I can't believe that my boyfriend cheat... How am I going to get the money to pay back my bro... What the hell is this guy's deal on the ben... Oh my god, my reflection in the water is so ho... It's gonna be a nice day today, that what the psycholo...
The voices were too much. "WILL YOU ALL SHUT THE HELL UP! YOU'RE GIVING ME A HEADACHE!" Matt screamed out loud, everyone around him, suddenly looking at the pair. He just at Emilie, his eyes half closed from the pain. "Please... help me control this..." He said quietly.

Emilie was already in a bit of a shaky state now what with having her thoughts go back to Pinehearst, so when Matt began shouting, even though not necessarily shouting at her, she could feel the hot tears sting at her eyes again. She didn't want to cry, but at the same time she couldn't stop them from falling. Taking in a deep breath and wiping at her eyes, she looked at him, and tried to talk, "Because you... obviously don't just... have healing powers..., you must have the same... ability as me, maybe not exactly the same, but you obviously... have power mimicry and not healing." She did her best to speak through her tears, she just wanted to get away, she felt as if she was embarrassing herself.
As she had began to walk away from him, in a bit of a mess, she heard him approach her and then ask her not to leave him. She turned to him then, and saw the the pain etched on his face and her heart lurched for him. It wasn't like Emilie to just ignore people and let them suffer. She ran her hair through her hair, "Alright.... I'll... try... but as you ... you can .... I'm not ... exactly in a good .... place myself ... right now." She knew to help him she'd have to try and calm herself down, but the tears were taking her over.
When Matt then screamed at everybody who were walking past to shut up, even though none of them were physically talking, Emilie felt for him even more. She was still in no proper fit state to talk, and wasn't sure how much she'd be able to help him, but when he then softly asked her to help him control it, she felt her mother's compassion run through her, and even though she was still crying herself, she went toward him, and wrapped her arms around him and brought him close to her, using a hand to run through the short hair he had.
"I'll try... maybe ... we can ... help ... each other."

Matt was shocked by Emilie's statement about why he was hearing thoughts? He was... a power mimic? Like her? No... No, he could heal... right after he touched that healer in the resturaunt... Yesterday it happened, when his healing was revealed... So it was true... He was a power mimic.
When she offered to help him, even though her mind wasn't in the right state of mind... Which he could still hear... Those memories of Pinehearst... And her being held-up... If Matt weren't holding back tears of pain, he'd be holding back tears of sadness. "I know... You're not in the right mind... But please... I'm someone who doesn't let the past influence... the future..." He said, the pain building from the voices.
The aftermath of his yelling resulted in Emilie coming over to him, saying, "I'll try... maybe ... we can ... help ... each other." Matt looked up into her eyes, as she looked at him, her hand running through his hair as time seemed to stand still for a moment... before the thoughts came running back into his head again. "Yeah... Let's go somewhere where's there's just the two of us..." He asked, grabbing his head again in pain.
